Google’s Matt Cutts dishes out the current on tag clouds and how it touches on search engine optimization. To start off, tag clouds are the visuals you see on the left or correct side bar of a blog site which are made up of words or tags that are in reality links to the tag pages on the website. Frequently used tags appear bigger than those that are rarely used. Cutts said there was a time when tag clouds were so big in blogging that a lot of bloggers used them to make the website more appealing. Although Cutts did not render a textbook rule on employing tag clouds, he is suggesting a more prudent approach to utilizing them. Less is more with tag clouds, it seems.
In tag clouds, duplicate content, which you can get penalised by Google for, happens when the link made extends to the tag URL when it has the like content as in the post url, homepage url, and other urls you created for the post in your site. When visitors get to the tag URL, thinking the link carries something else, and get that it has the like content as the post, it’s not hard to suppose that they will be frustrated. A web site can easily lose visitors and slide downwards in the rankings this way.
